Gaisce

The President’s Award is a self-development programme that encourages young people to find their passion, get active and make a difference in their community! Gaisce is a direct challenge from the President of Ireland to young people aged 15-25 to dream big and realise their potential!

Clann Family Resouce Centre (FRC) and the Oughterard Youth café are delighted to be able to support students from Transition Year in St. Paul’s to take on the Gaisce Bronze Award challenge every year.

The Bronze Award is the first, and shortest, level of the Gaisce Award – If you are between the ages of 15-25, then this challenge is ideal!

It is a voluntary after school initiative and comprises of 4 key challenge areas;

  • Community Involvement (Volunteering)
  • Personal Skills
  • Physical Recreation
  • An Adventure Journey

Each student must complete a number of hours in each area, learning new skills, getting fit and volunteering within their community. To celebrate their achievement and to undertake one last challenge the students finish off the process by taking on a 25km overnight hike at the end of the year.

The link with local community development organisations such as Clann FRC throughout the process both supports the young people to get involved with the community while also sourcing much needed volunteers for individual community groups during the year. It is a great relationship and a win-win-win for all involved!
